a) Advantages of using the cloud for mobile apps, with Google App Engine as an example. We shall build and deploy a simple Google App Engine application in the Cloud live.
b) Develop a simple Android Native Application that is powered by the services developed in (a). Demonstrate the same for a Mobile Web Application
c) Cover WURFL and how the device database can help you serve different content based on the capabilities of the mobile device that accesses your application.

While desktops and laptops have gotten more and more powerful, performance considerations for applications running on the desktop are not critical to the success of the app.

However, mobile devices are quickly becoming a viable computing platform and many devices now can run various applications which were only seen on the desktop previously.

As the developer community ports applications from desktop to the cell phone, performance becomes a very critical factor for success since cellphones are still under-powered as compared to the desktops.

This presentation will talk about best practices w.r.t performance while developing applications for the Android Platform. It will outline tips and techniques for extracting the best performance from android. These tips and techniques are a collation of well known java best practices that apply to Android as well as our learning at TapNTap as we go about building a next generation user interface for an Internet tablet.

Here are some of the topics that will be covered:

Java performance tips that will enhance your android app performance.

Performance Best practices which will apply even for non-android Java programming.

Architecting to avoid the dreaded “ANR (Application not responding)” dialog.

Benchmarking and tracing tools:

Caliper

Traceview

Building custom views : Tips on how to extract the best frame rate before knocking on OpenGLs door.
Precompute for performance.
Layout tricks to get the best load performance.
Differences between mobile and tablets.

Takeaways for the Audience

Best practices for Java development (performance improvement takeaways for any java app).

Tips/tools and techniques on applying these best practices.

HTML5 is expected to become mainstream soon. It brings a lot of new features that developers can incorporate today. The Webkit browser is currently the best implementation of the HTML5 standards and it is also available on a variety of Mobile devices like iPhone, Android, etc.

Mobile Web applications are getting powerful day by day. They have distinct advantages over Native mobile applications. With Webkit available on most Smartphone browsers, you can create powerful mobile web applications today. Combine this with some of the latest HTML5 features, and it makes a compelling alternative available to developers today.

This session will give an overview of :
a) What mobile web applications are and their pros / cons vis-a-vis Native Mobile applications.
b) HTML5 features like geolocation, offline storage, web workers, etc
c) How one can use HTML5 features mentioned in (b) to develop mobile web applications today.
d) Demonstrate all the above features via code samples.
e) Cover challenges involved in making sure that the same code base runs on all mobile browsers in a majority of Smartphones.

Takeaway for the audience:
a) Knowledge about upcoming HTML5 standards specifically features like geolocation, offline storage, web workers, etc.

b) Understand of Mobile Web applications and how we can use HTML5 standards to deliver powerful web applications that are delivered on most smartphones today.

c) Challenges involved in making sure that the Mobile Web Applications works well in most browsers across different devices.

Mobile development is still in a nascent stage. New platforms keep emerging and old ones regularly undergo major changes. To confuse matters further there are several cross-platform tools each claiming to use a single codebase to target multiple phones. What is a developer to do?

In this talk we will look at some of the key cross-platform mobile platforms out there including Appcelarator Titanium, PhoneGap and MoSync. We will start out by reviewing the different mobile platforms and development environments before reviewing the landscape of cross-platform tools. We will discuss the different design approaches used by these platforms to support their target smart-phones. Quick demos using a few of these platforms will be shown so that the audience will get a flavor of the low level coding details as well as supporting tools like IDEs and simulators provided. Java and QT are traditional cross-platform environments which have a place in mobile development as well. We will take a quick look at support available for these on mobile platforms. Finally we compare the different approaches in terms of functional limitations, programming complexity, deployment and lock-in.
